Jordan “JJ” Ross is a native Los Angelino who started drumming and taking lessons at the age of 5. Jordan’s early fascination with drumming quickly spread to ethnic percussion and world music. By age 10, Jordan was performing weekly at the World Stage in Leimert Park, and by 11, Jordan was the youngest active member of the Patio Players World Percussion Ensemble of Motherland Music in Inglewood, California. While attending Milken Community High School, in Los Angeles, Jordan regularly performed on “Blue Mondays,” with Joe Kincaid & The Soul Brothers Band, which was voted “R&B Band of the Year in 2011,” by The Black Music Association Academy of America, Los Angeles Chapter.
In June of 2017, Jordan graduated from the Herb Alpert School of Music at UCLA and received a Bachelors of Arts degree in Ethnomusicology with a concentration in World Music. Jordan also graduated with a minor degree in Music Industry. During his time at UCLA, Jordan studied under Trumpet great, Professor Bobby Rodriguez, and played in the UCLA Latin Big Band. Jordan also studied with legendary guitarist, Kenny Burrell, and played in the UCLA Jazz Combo. Additionally, Jordan’s Music Industry minor allowed him to work closely with session drummer and producer Mike Shapiro of Sergio Mendes and Brasil ‘66. While at UCLA, Jordan also studied Classical North Indian Hindustani Music, West African drumming, Middle Eastern Percussion, and eventually founded the UCLA Klezmer Ensemble.
Currently, Jordan is a studio musician, a touring drummer, a music educator, and a Youtube performer with over 30 million views online. Having toured internationally with recording artist and Youtube sensation Sam Tsui, Jordan also performed with India Carney of Season 8’s The Voice! Moreover, Jordan has also performed with Arianna Afsar, of American Idol Season 8, who is currently starring in Chicago’s Production of Hamilton. Between session work, Jordan is also the resident drummer of the Neo-Soul and Hip-Hop Music Collective, Westwood Village Entertainment Group; a diverse ensemble comprised of Jazz and World Music graduates of the UCLA Herb Alpert School Music.
When he isn’t rehearsing or performing, Jordan can be found teaching drums, percussion, piano, guitar, and bass to his students at Rock4Kids (formerly Music Stars and Masters), a music school and studio in West LA. Jordan also teaches drums and percussion at his own studio and is also available for private in-home or group lessons in the greater Los Angeles area.
